Generation C Technology Exposure – Defining Boundaries

It seems like every generation is summed up by an idea, and this generation is no different. The newest generation has been deemed, “Generation C”, or “The Connected Generation”. With the emergence of tablets and touch screens, our children are learning about technology in a completely new way. “The Wired Child”, showing the benefits of teaching a child to use technology, alsong with how to spot the signs of technology addiction. 8 in 10 children 5 and under use the internet at least once a week. 25 of children 3 and under use the internet daily, and 50% of children 10 and under use the internet on a daily basis. While the internet makes things easier, it’s important to encourage boundaries. Children 2 and under should have no exposure to screens,and children 2 and over should limit their screen time to 1-2 hours, including TV. The dangers of technology addiction are beginning to start at a younger age. In fact, a 4 year old received treatment for technology addiction in the United Kingdom. Help encourage healthy technology use in your family by limiting time spent in front of a screen, along with becoming informed on technology overuse on mental and physical health (i.e. attention problems, aggression, impaired body image, attachment disorders), designating sacred time to reconnect with child, exploring alternatives to technology as a family, and scheduling a balance between technology use and other activities.
