To deviate is to slightly turn away from a suggested route or from the most desirable approach.

Swerve‘ is another word which is similar in meaning to deviate and digress.
To swerve is to make a sudden and sharp turn from a line of course.

The car swerved to avoid hitting the cyclist.
The motorcyclists swerve during a race.
