A newspaper report is a factual description of an event. It is brief yet comprehensive, factual, accurate but interesting. A newspaper report includes:
- Headline- The headline states the topic in a short phrase or statement. It must be strong, catchy and brief (articles, prepositions etc. may be left out)
- Byline- It tells by whom the report is written. Write ‘By’ followed by your name.
- Paragraph 1- The first paragraph talks in brief about the name/s of person or event/incident the news is about, the place, day, date and time of the event/incident and the reason why the incident took place.
- Paragraph 2- The second paragraph gives the details of the event/incident in a chronological order. Accounts of the eyewitnesses describing the incident and their feelings may be included here to add to the authenticity of the report.
- Paragraph 3- The concluding paragraph states any future course of action being planned.
A few important points to remember while writing a report are:
- It is written in indirect speech and in third person.
- Passive voice is used.
- Only the relevant information must be included
- Language must be formal and simple with a neutral tone.
