Prepositions of place or position

Prepositions which are used to indicate place or position are:

  1. At – It is used with small places e.g. at the old church, at Chandni Chowk, at the dining table

2. In – It is used with bigger places e.g. in Delhi, in the Northern Plains of India, in China

It is also used to indicate enclosed spaces e.g. in the house, in the river

3. On – It is used to indicate a position of a person or an object on a surface e.g. on the roof, on the table

4. Beside – It is used to indicate a position next to another person or object e.g. beside the table, beside him

5. Against – It is used to indicate a position leaning close to another object e.g. against the wall, against the table

6. Between – It is used to indicate position where there are two persons or objects e.g. between the two bags, between Rohit and Mohit

7. Among – It is used to indicate position where there are more than two persons or objects e.g. among themselves, among your friends

8. Under – It is used to indicate a lower position mostly in a three-dimensional space e.g. under the bridge, under the pillow

9. Below – It is used to indicate lower position mostly in a two-dimensional space e.g. below the margin, below the heading. It is also used to indicate ‘less than’.

10. Above – It is used to indicate higher position in both two and three-dimensional space e.g. above the given lines, above my head

A few more prepositions which indicate position are: behind, near, up, down and in front of.
