Make up a fight is to put an end to it

Make up a story is to create false excuses or explanations
It seems you are making up a story just to get excused from this test.

Make up one’s mind is to come to a decision
You need to quickly make up your mind regarding the field you wish to specialize in.

Make up for is to compensate for some loss
You need to work harder this time to make up for the grades you lost in the last term.
