We discussed the rule of subject-verb agreement. Subject – verb agreement rule says that:
Singular (one in number) subject follows verb+s/singular form of verb ( is,has..)
Plural (many in number) subject follows verb/ plural form of verb ( are,have..)
However, second person You, whether singular or plural, always follow verb/ plural form of verb.
* You do your work carefully.
* You have got a good bag.
* All of you need to work harder.
* You don’t have to waste your time on this.
On the other hand, collective nouns (names given to different collections ) are always taken as singular entities and are followed by verb+s/ singular form of verb, despite the fact that they refer to more than one thing.
* This class is really noisy.
* A group of students has gone to meet the principal to discuss discipline issues.
* Today’s youth is highly aggressive and ambitious.
Now try these:
* The mob of local people ____ (was/were) too aggressive to handle.
* You ____(love/loves) chocolates so I brought you some.
* The constellation of stars ____(is/are) a beauty to watch.
(Answers: was, love, is)
